Gorges du Fier
The Fier is one of the most important rivers of Haute-Savoie At 10 km from the west of Annecy, it digged the Gorges du Fier, one of the most grandiose
phenomenon of erosion by a river. The Gorges are 300 m in length and 70 m in depth.
The Gorges du Fier are classed among the most attractive curiosities of the french Alps. Since 1869, it’s accessible to public by a footbridge suspended
27 meters above the torrent. Inside this gigantic cleft, we discover many potholes, that the river digged for thousand years.
Against the rocky outcrop, the flood water scale indicates the height of water during the haviest floods. At the lowest water level, the flow of the Fier
is about 3 m3 per second. During heavy rains it can reach 300 to 500 m3 per second. The crevasse is so narrow that when it rains heavily, the water can
rise up to 26 metres in a few hours.
